This study uses a restricted-access version of 24 h dietary recall data from the 2018–2021 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and meteorological data to examine the effect of heat and cold waves on food consumption and nutrient intake. The results suggest that cold waves increase individuals’ intake of key nutrients such as calories, protein, fat, saturated fat, and sodium. In contrast, heat waves have little to no significant effect on nutrient intake. Aside from the significant increase in the consumption of beer and chicken, the effects of heat or cold waves on overall food consumption are minimal. Depending on age and income level, cold and heat waves have different effects on food consumption and nutrient intake. This study suggests that temperature, particularly extreme heat and cold, plays a significant role in shaping individuals’ dietary patterns. Therefore, special attention is needed to maintain a balanced and healthy diet during extreme temperatures.
