Summary:Background: Family with persons of alcohol abuse is more likely to have conflicts among spouse; as a result wives suffer from domestic violence. Objectives: To assess and compare the domestic violence and suicidal risk among wives of alcohol dependent and non-alcohol user males. Methodology: A comparative study was carried out among 60 wives of alcohol dependent males and 60 wives of non alcohol users males in Chennai. Semi- structured proforma was used for recording the sociodemographic data. Severity of alcohol dependence questionnaire (SAD-Q) was used to assess the severity of alcohol dependence in husbands. Modified conflict tactics scale (MCTS) was used to assess domestic violence among wives. Becks suicidal ideation scale was used to assess suicidal ideation among the wives. Result: There was significant relationship between psychological abuse and SES. Psychological abuse was higher among lower middle and upper lower socioeconomic status group (p=0.003). There was statistically significant difference between two groups in negotiation, psychological aggression, physical assault, sexual coercion and injury (p=<0.05). Psychological aggression and injury were significantly correlated with domestic violence with SAD Q score (p=0.039 & <0.01 respectively). Attitude towards living and dying, suicidal ideation and characteristics of contemplated attempt were different between two groups (p<0.05). Conclusion: Domestic violence was higher among the low socioeconomic status group. There was strong relationship between severity of alcohol dependence and domestic violence. The wives of alcohol dependent males had higher suicide ideation as compared to wives of non-alcohol users.
