| Summary: | This contribution focuses on the impact of a third language on the construction of multilingual repertoires and on the evolution of learners’ representations about languages and language learning as their repertoires widen and diversify. Representations are closely linked to the learner’s life experience and linguistic practices; as objects of discourse, they are subject to strong variation, on-going negotiation and/or reconstruction. We will first look into the language learning background of high-school pupils and university students in order to identify pre-existing motivations that guide language choice and thus shape the development of multilingual repertoires. Next, we will address the question of whether learning a new language can actually lead to the evolution of learners’ naïve representations towards a more dynamic view of multilingual competence as a structured set of partial, unstable competences, whose activation depends on specific communicative circumstances. Finally, we will explore the ways in which learning a third language can influence further language learning. |
