Given the current context implying a strong competition for very few long-term positions, such an institutional demand is reinforced by the injunction imposed on researchers to increase their productivity in short periods of time and to become internationally mobile. Hence, this article studies postdoctoral fellows recruited on temporary contracts by the National Fund of Scientific Research (FNRS) in Belgium. The authors show the importance of adopting a relational perspective when analyzing scientific careers by considering their interference with private life. Three types of spatiotemporal configurations have been identified : a logic of integration, a logic of conciliation, and a logic of conflict. These are associated with researchers’ life situations (being single, living with a partner, having children or not…) and highlight gender dynamics. |
