| Summary: | Although The Library for Reading is strongly associated with the name O.I. Senkovsky, it is known that at different times other people, such as N.I. Grech, I.A. Krilov, and E.F. Korsh acted as editors of the magazine. Apparently, this position was held by them formally, and in the first years of the journal, their task was more to be a guarantee of credibility with the government. Also, at some point the name of the editor became a kind of “brand” — and it is precisely this “brand” that the name of Senkovsky became in the middle of the 1830s. In this context, Senkovsky’s attempt to place E.I. Guber, a person of little prominence in the literary sphere, as a responsible editor of The Library for Reading is of particular interest. Perhaps Senkovsky really wanted to share at least part of his editorial duties with the new employee, but this was contrary to A.F. Smirdin’s commercial interests. In the notice sent to the Censorship сommittee, he did not object to this appointment, but only under two conditions, one of which (to prohibit periodicals from publishing reports about the new editor of The Library for Reading) left the committee members in some confusion. Nevertheless a compromise between the publisher and the Сensorship committee never happened. |
