| Summary: | Migration between Iran and the southern coasts of the Gulf is not a recent phenomenon. It diversified during the 20th century under the influence of political and economic changes in both Iran and Arab countries, sometimes leading to long-term settlement. After the Iranian revolution in 1979 and during the war between Iran‑Iraq, a new wave of migration, originating mostly from major Iranian cities, joined the existing Iranian presence. During the 1990s–2000s appeared a new trend as Iranians who had “backed” from western countries, decided to move to Dubai to benefit from job opportunities. Through an ethnographic account of transnational urban spaces, this article analyses the footprint of various waves of Iranian migration in both the old and the so‑called “New Dubai”. |
