description This paper focuses on the thematic and interactionist aspects of second language classrooms speech, and more specifically on the “model of speech progression” that has been proposed by Cicurel (1992, 2011). We will describe the model through the analysis of data that has been collected in a classroom of French as a foreign language for migrants, in France. “To make learners talk” is the main goal to which language teachers aim and which they seem to reach through a consistent questionning. The “model of speech progression” will be studied through teachers’ injunctions to have every student talk in the foreign language and about this language, while attempting to maintain the thematic consistency of the dialogue.
