Description
Summary:According to communitarianism, a person’s social identity and personality are largely molded by community relationships, with a smaller degree of development being placed on individualism. This school of thought usually opposes extreme individualism and disagrees with extreme laissez faire policies that neglect the stability of the overall community. Although communitarianism is considered as a new school of thought, it has criticized the main notions of liberalism in many aspects. This school of thought, in its narrow and specialized meaning, has two waves: the academic wave in 1980s and the responsive wave in 1990s. Michel Sandel and Michel Walzer, as the most prominent advocates of the first wave, have put special questions on the liberalist bases. Since the first wave of communitarianism is based on academic level, the second wave, such as the works of Amitai Etzioni and William Galston, are sociological researches.
