description An article by the author from 2011 suggests that the view from the tombs of the North-East Necropolis of Hierapolis may have been a primary reason for choosing burial on this remote and little-visited slope instead of in the city’s main necropolis. The view from the tombs includes large parts of the city of Hierapolis, the wide plain with the river Lykos and the Salbacos mountain range. The lofty position on the slopes offered a view onto an ideal Graeco-Roman landscape as described in several ancient sources. Further, the visual connection with the hometown must have been essential in the placement of the tombs. This extended and updated English version of the article makes these observations accessible to a wider readership, taking into account further observations made over many years of studying the necropolis.
