| Summary: | Art projects help to revitalise peripheral areas and create new local resources that address a number of socio-environmental issues. Drawing on a dedicated database, this article identifies 226 artistic sites located in peripheral areas (mainly in Europe and North America), selected for the site-specific practices developed by their 2,016 associated artists. A total of 2,646 original site-specific works/projects were referenced from a sample of approximately one-third of the artistic venues. This sample includes 65 entries, covering 80% of the artists in the dataset, or 1,645 individuals. A field survey was conducted in 25 of these venues.Several statistical methods, including network analysis, were used to examine the artistic circulations and transnational networks involved in the artistic development of these peripheral spaces. The results reveal a wide variety of artistic circulations, encompassing both renowned artists with international reach and those whose activities remain locally grounded. The presence of prominent figures in site-specificity art –invited by diverse artistic organisations– also contributes to the creation of transnational networks. These networks are a factor of extroversion for certain neglected territories, which strategically leverage them to improve their image and visibility. This raises important questions about of the territorial balance between artistic distinction through branding and the integration of local logics specific to artistic venues. The extroversion of peripheral spaces can therefore come at the expense of their territorial specificities and the originality of the artistic work produced there. |
