| Summary: | This article explains how, between the last third of the 19th century and the first of the 20th, Barcelona acted as an alternative political and economic capital to Madrid. Its weight as a cultural and industrial centre catapulted it as the visible capital of the marginalized sectors of the political and economic world of the Alfonsina Restoration, highlighting the regionalists and protectionist industrialists. On the other hand, it was also the pole of attraction of the illustrious marginalized: the different workers of the left and ultra-left, breaking the myth of the Rose of Fire and the City of Bombs, revolutionary epicentre in 1909, 1917, 1919-1923 and 1931-1939. Finally, the public offer of jobs sponsored by the catalanists via the Mancomunitat and the Generalitat, was an attractive claim for Barcelona to be a meeting point for bohemians, intellectuals and professionals and turn it into a Paris of the South. |
