| Summary: | This article aims to explore the connections established by critics between Flaubert’s writing and some of the technical innovations of his time. Our focus will be particularly on how speed is represented, as well as on the ways in which new inventions – namely photography, the railway and the press – shape the writing of modern times in L’Éducation sentimentale. To enrich our reflection on these forms, we will also examine the variations in tempo in this novel, before turning our attention to a central aspect of its composition: the idleness and reverie of the protagonist. |
