description What was Evliyâ’s attitude toward the Europeans, or the Franks as he calls them? Europeans are always referred to disparagingly but on the personal level Evliyâ had no problem befriending individual Europeans. This paper shows that on various levels, religious, political, social, scientific, moral and aesthetic, Evliyâ appreciates european order, law, justice, fortifications, clockwork mechanisms, medicine, printing, libraries, even if he can’t accept their wine drinking and the women ways. He didn’t fall in love with them, sometimes he used them to pass judgments on those he loved, the Ottomans.
