| Summary: | This analysis of the real place occupied by Congolese literature at the global level (in fact, it hardly goes beyond the French-speaking ‘literary space’, due to the very low number of translations) is based on the results of a consultation of the LITAF database. It proceeds by a comparison with the literary production of other African countries. It measures the relative importance of literary production by country, by literary genre, as well as the legitimacy acquired by the main writers respectively. It shows that, relative to its demographic importance, the DRC has a mediocre, even very low, record. An analysis which takes account of changes by decade makes it possible to put this assessment into perspective and to express several hypotheses as to the factors which explain such an assessment; among these factors, the effects of the dictatorship and problems of governance, affecting education in particular, could have played a decisive role in the weakening of literacy. |
