Description
Summary:Background: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic immune-mediated disorder affecting the oral mucosa and is considered a potentially malignant disorder. Although several treatment options are available for OLP management, a definitive treatment has not yet been available to date. Matricaria chamomilla (Chamomile) is a highly valuable medicinal herb known for its anti-inflammatory properties and is used for OLP management. Objective: This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of Chamomile in alleviating the symptoms associated with OLP. Methods: A detailed search in MEDLINE via PubMed, Scopus, Ovid, ProQuest, Google Scholar, and Cochrane between 1st January 2014 and 31st July 2024 included three randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that conformed to the inclusion standards. Results: In total, three RCTs comprising 144 patients with OLP satisfied the inclusion criteria. All three RCTs demonstrated a low risk of bias and quality assessment was done. The studies by Nashat et al., Lopez Jornet and Aznar-Cayuela and Tvarijonaviciute et al. reported a statistically significant decrease in lesion size, pain, and burning sensation with no changes in total antioxidant level. All three included studies reported Chamomile to be effective in managing OLP. Conclusion: This systematic review suggests that Chamomile effectively reduces OLP symptoms, particularly pain and burning sensations.
