description Region, a concept so widely discussed in Geography and the Social Sciences and then ostracised for a long time in science in general, has reappeared as fundamental in analytical interpretations of the urban and in the practice of urban and regional planning since the end of the last century. This means considering that reflecting on the problem of the urban today requires a theoretical exercise and careful observation of reality, considering that everyday life no longer takes place and is reproduced only in cities, but in regions with strong internal cohesion, intense circulation, increasingly large dimensions and full of socio-spatial differentiations. Although the change in the geographical scale of social processes is part of the process, it is salutary to understand that what is being recognised is also a transformation in the nature of social relations in the sense of the so-called regional urbanisation process. Based on this context, the aim of this article is to analyze the metropolitan regionalization process in Brazil, through the hypothesis that the Rio de Janeiro – São Paulo megaregion is the most complete form of regional urbanization and the concentration and centralization of capital.
