Ultrasonic testing (UT) is a widely adopted method for
inspecting bolts, offering non-destructive testing and
evaluation (NDE) of critical components in various
industrial sectors. One application of UT is the inspection
of embedded fasteners or bolts that are used to secure
structures. This paper will focus on the best practices for
performing ultrasonic inspections of bolts, providing
insights into standard operating procedures (SOPs) that
ensure consistent and reliable results. The discussion will
cover key aspects of effective UT, including preparation as
well as the importance of maintaining optimal on-site
conditions for accurate data acquisition. We will focus on
inspection of bolts in field conditions, where
environmental factors and access constraints can
significantly impact test outcomes. Additionally, factors
such as bolt surface conditions, test setup and conditions
that influence ultrasonic transmission and acquisition will
be explored. Finally, the discussion will offer
recommendations on how to mitigate common challenges,
improve signal transmission, and enhance data
interpretation, thus optimizing the overall effectiveness
of ultrasonic bolt inspections. Proper setup before testing
is essential to ensure the accuracy of ultrasonic results.
