| description | In the context of industrial pollution in south-eastern France, this article analyses the role played by the local written press in the circulation of information on the industrial waste crisis (known as “red muds”) at the Gardanne alumina plant. A cross analysis was conducted on the media treatment of environmental and health debates on these wastes, focusing on the media frameworks and nomination strategies in the local press over the period from 2010 to 2019. It appears that the media construction of a common problem integrating marine pollution, land-based pollution, with human and animal health, has developed over the last decade. In the local press, the “red muds” lexicon carries the memory of the accumulation of industrial waste from the plant and remains the expression of the social protest and activism against large-scale industrial pollution. |
