Summary:The article focuses on the potential development of the national training in engineering. The author has investigated the most fundamental issue of training engineers - transformation of the traditional educational paradigm. There is also a critical analysis of the technocratic, knowledge-bound educational paradigm, as well as a view on the competence-based approach seen as one of the potential methodological basics for engineering training in Russia. As part of the methodological requirements for the competence-based approach, the article provides proof to the need for language skills training in future engineers.
