Description
Summary:A real public library is the source of democracy and is essential for the existence of Intellectual Freedom in a society. Although there have been significant developments in Turkish li-brarianship since the foundation of the Turkish Republic, public libraries have been neglected for many years. They have been looked upon as places where school children prepare their homework. Children, adults and young adults never had the chance of using them as they should. The poor quality of the collections, ignorance of the importance of public relations and the need of users, and insufficient number of professional staff, etc. caused this result. Fortunately, there have been some changes in Turkish librarianship in recent years, especially in public libraries. This article gives detailed information about the latest developments.
