description The English county Flora as a genre emerged in the 17th century and was consolidated in the 19th century as a result of a variety of historical, cultural, and scientific factors. This article revises the existing literature on the genre and looks into its defining characteristics in the light of book history and history of science. With this aim, two corpora were constructed: a corpus of thirty British county Floras including at least one title from each decade of the 19th century, as well as a corpus of about sixty review articles which appeared in specialist journals and general periodicals. While contributing to our understanding of this genre, this article also explores the making of scientific books in the provinces.
