| Summary: | The cannabis economy in Morocco is an outcome of the long and complex history of the Rif region and has developed since the 1960s into the development of a major hashish industry that has recently been affected by a significant modernization process of both cannabis cultivation and hashish production. This ongoing modernization of the hashish industry raises more questions than it answers, particularly with regard to economic development, environmental balances, and the political stability of the region. Therefore, the future of the Rif and its peasantry undoubtedly still depends on that of the cannabis economy and the evolution of Moroccan and international anti-drug legislations. |
