We postulate that the Intendancy Regime was maintained, but it was profoundly modified, and partly suppressed, from the very moment that the Governmental Board was established, in order to obtain the political commitment of the whole territory and to guarantee its governability. These modifications aiming to increase the control of the provincial government by the central authorities, triggered a dispute between centralism and federation that crossed the decade of the 1820s. In this process, Intendancies as an institution showed their ductility and were the backbone of the monarchy’s transition towards the republic in Chile from 1810 until its constitutional implementation in 1833.Intendencies, Subdelegations, Deputy Judge, Monarchy, Republic. |
