Description
Summary:The subject of this review article is an anthology edited by Vincent Balnat and Barbara Kaltz. It is entitled “Genus and Gender in European Languages. History and Present” and was published in 2025 by Narr Francke Attempto Verlag in Tübingen. The volume comprises 468 pages and has been published as the sixth volume in the series “Sprachvergleich” (ISBN 978-3-381-12301-8). From the perspective of linguistics, particularly cultural and language studies, the present volume makes a significant contribution to the exploration of the linguistic dimensions of gender and gender equality. The contributions gathered in this volume address various aspects of gender equality in language, taking into account both grammatical and social perspectives. At the core of the discussion is the analysis of gender representation in linguistic expression and the role of language in the construction of gender identity. The authors examine how linguistic changes contribute to the promotion of gender equality in society and what social implications arise from these changes. The volume offers an interdisciplinary approach to these topics and is of interest to both linguists and practitioners involved in the implementation of gender-neutral language in public and private spheres. The work invites a critical engagement with the theoretical and practical aspects of gender linguistics, opening new perspectives for research.
