description The osteological remains from the Samus culture settlement of Potapov Luzhki III, located within the city of Tomsk on the right-bank floodplain terrace, are analyzed. In total, the osteological collection includes 1,674 bones, the vast majority of which belong to mammals and fish. Bird bones are rare. This fact demonstrates that the basis of life of the settlement inhabitants was hunting and fishing. The fish of different species and size was caught using mass fishing tackle. Hunting was mainly of beaver and, to a slightly lesser extent, elk. The prey of other species was not the main one. Domestic animals are represented mainly by dogs. Cattle and horse bones are rare and may represent late contamination. This picture differs from the one described earlier at the same culture settlement of Krokhalevka 1, where the number of domestic animal bones was comparable with bones of wild species, and elk predominated among the latter. However, Krokhalevka 1 is located much further south and reflects a later stage in the development of the Samus culture.
