Summary:At the beginning of the 20thcenturyas the Arab communitiesstarting with Egyptfought for independence not onlymilitarily but alsosocially, politically, and culturallyagainsttheWestern colonialist mentalityof the modern era, many poets and writers reflectedthe weaknesses ofsociety’s fundamental values in their works. Hafez Ibrahim, whowasknown for his poetry andhasbeenreferred to astheSha’irun-Nil[Poet of the Nile]andSha’irush-Sha’b[Poet of the People],hadan importantproseworkcalledLayali Satih[TheNights ofSatih], which reflects the dimensions ofthesocial changes that occurred in Egypt at the end of the 19thandbeginning of the 20thcenturies.LayaliSatihis consideredasignificant workof the period that addresses thepoet’scriticisms and views.This studyanalyzes both technically and thematically the workLayaliSatih, whichblendstheclassicalpoetic style (maqamah)withthenovel-like featuresofmodern storytellingand also has autobiographical elements that reflectthe problemsthe author faced with the British during his time in the army. The work highlights the ongoing struggle between tradition and modernity, which is still considered a serious threat in the globalized world of the 21stcentury,as well asthe corruption of journalism and the press, the education system,women’srights, the concept of happiness, moral decay, the relationship between politics and religion, freedom,and the privileges given to refugees. The work addresses these social realities and provides a critical perspectivetowardthem.
