Description
Summary:Starting from the situational analysis of an event that took place in the public housing neighbourhood of San Siro (Milan) – a social activity organized by a neighbourhood committee that turned into an agora, an assembly, thanks to the participation of the city council members, third sector organizations, and social movements activists – the paper will ethnographically investigate the category of “institutional abandonment”, i.e. the condition of desolation and decay that would affect that urban space. This category, used in an indiscriminate manner by disparate social actors – including urban planners and social scientists – shows a gap between its frequency and the factual reality when it is associated to all the public interventions implemented in the neighbourhood in the last ten years. Thus, the paper will analyse this gap, its interpretative potential, and its function within the broader urban politics of Milan.
