description This article is the result of a thesis in progress, the aim of which is to examine the attractiveness of the town centres of medium-sized towns through a bi-national comparison between France and Belgium, and more specifically between Hauts-de-France and Wallonia. Starting from a paradoxical observation about the desire to live in medium-sized towns and the commercial decline of their town centres, our ambition is to decipher the way in which commercial centrality functions in these contexts. The aim here is to present the different qualitative approaches used in the research method. These approaches, which focus primarily on the perceptions of a wide range of stakeholders, are designed to capture the dynamics, or at least the relationships, between residents, the retail offer and the principle of governance. In addition, they make it possible to question certain results, particularly those relating to the representations of these areas.
