Description
Summary:The history of collecting continues to raise new questions and the systematization of knowledge. This study focuses on the figure of King Carlos I (1863-1908), concentrating on the period when he occupied the Palácio das Necessidades (Lisbon) after the death of his grandfather, Fernando II, in 1885. As a result, King Carlos created two “new” private spaces in the existing building: his painting studio and the Oceanographic Museum, which were maintained (approximately) until the monarch's death in 1908. This article focuses on these two spaces. Despite previous studies, there is insufficient information about the occupation of these spaces and their ambience. Therefore, this article aims to reconstruct the occupation in plan of these spaces in the palace, describing their main characteristics. The methodology adopted was based on the analysis of documentary and iconographic sources, as well as a bibliographical review. This study established the exact location of the painting studio and the Oceanographic Museum in the Palácio das Necessidades, highlighting their main characteristics. In this way, the research contributes to a deeper understanding of the history of these spaces, and in turn, to the history of nineteenth-century collecting in Portugal.
