description Through the prism of the pictures of the « pièces gothiques », this article gives perspective to a new approach to relationships between text and image, the one examining how relationships text-image can have an impact on readers. These gothic-character booklets were printed after the last third of the 15th century until the end of the 16th century. These booklets, composed of a few sheets and illustrated with little more than one or two woodcuts, form an interesting corpus, in some respects, to grasp the social action of the relationships between text and image. In order to print these brochures rapidly et at a lower cost, typographers reused pictures from their stock of engravings. They selected the ones which best correspond – in their view – to the subject dealt with in the booklet, either in connection with a passage from the text, a word used in the title or the printed text, or reflecting the satirical, parodic political or religious tone of the publication, otherwise by comparison or by association of ideas. By their location outside the text and because of the engravings’ reuse, the « pièces gothiques » offer a wide variety of relations text-image. These relationships are undoubtedly not without consequences for readers. Not only do the weight of words and images change the reception of the texts printed in the « pièces gothiques » and accompany the reader in doing a social act (prayer, communion in sorrow and joy of the life of French kings and queens, reformation of morals), but the relationships text-image also create differences and dissimilarities and interfere in the reception of these brochures. They predispose the reader to understand what he is about to read. They guide him in his reading. They direct or re-direct his attention to this or that passage of the text, for this or that action of the king and his army. They also affect the understanding of the « message » given by the booklet. The analysis of the various degrees of relationships text-image, together with the study of variations and persistances of these links highlight the thought-patterns which determine the illustration of these brochures. The « pièces gothiques » are clear evidence of the associative et connotative thinking of the printers in the making and the illustration of these popular booklets.
