Description
Summary:What this article seeks to show is that despite the changes that have taken place in our societies, the demand for a universal system of rights, with attendant guarantees and means of effective enforcement, is still a valid strategy in a democratic society and a state under the rule of law. As long as it implies respect for others, toleration is always an important element in virtuous conduct by citizens. Nevertheless, it must cede preference to rights and to freedom of conscience when the conflict between beliefs impinges on the political plane. Any other option would disrupt the proper interlocking of the different parts of the structure of fundamental rights.
