Summary:This article aims to understand the context behind the appearance of the “paperback” category in children's publishing, and its appropriation by children's publishers. Firstly, we will offer a comparative analysis of French and Spanish publishers’ strategies. Secondly, we will study the development, at the turn of the century, of an opposition between a children’s "media" paperback and a "school" paperback, and consequently between a market and a school legitimization.
