| description | The article deals with an urgent problem of developing an extracurricular learning model that contributes to improving the level of English language proficiency by increasing motivation. The insufficient number of class hours is a considerate hamper on the way to master some of the skills, abilities and competencies specified in the programme. In this regard, both teachers and students have to overcome a number of difficulties to achieve the necessary level of language proficiency. The proposed model is associated with developing and conducting an extracurricular large-scale intellectual game in the format of “What? Where? When?” in English, which is symbolically named 5 Minds. The target audience is students of non-linguistic areas of study. Since motivation is one of the most important factors in the process of mastering a foreign language in non-linguistic faculties, we have adjusted the concept and principles of the well-known game, developed a methodology for creating questions in order to effectively include them in foreign language activities and stimulate the students’ motivation. The annual practice of 5 Minds (since 2014) allows us to regulate the content of language material, the technology of developing and conducting intellectual games. After a series of meetings, including preliminary preparation for the game, introduction of the specifics of working with questions, training in loosening up and creative attitude to situations, participation in the game “What? Where? When?” in English and subsequent discussion of the issues and proposed topics, there is a significant increase in interest just to the topic presented in the game. This extracurricular practice of teaching students from non-linguistic faculties creates conditions for the implementation of the main goal - increasing communicative competence and readiness to solve communicative intellectual problems in English in classes. |
