The study design is the instrument to carry out the objective in the best possible manner. Choosing the right study design is the first important step in the conduct of a research study. Study designs can be classified as observational or interventional based on whether the objective is to ‘observe’ a process or actively ‘intervene’ with a drug or surgical intervention. The most basic observational study designs include descriptive studies-case reports, case series or cross-sectional studies that are hypothesis generating study designs. The analytical study designs include case-control and cohort studies where the researcher tries to establish an association between the exposure and outcome. This article provides an overview of the various study designs. |
