Description
Summary:A good research study begins with a good hypothesis. From the hypothesis arise the objectives of the study. The study design is the instrument to carry out the objective in the best possible manner. Choosing the right study design is the first important step in the conduct of a research study. Study designs can be classified as observational or interventional based on whether the objective is to ‘observe’ a process or actively ‘intervene’ with a drug or surgical intervention. The most basic observational study designs include descriptive studies-case reports, case series or cross-sectional studies that are hypothesis generating study designs. The analytical study designs include case-control and cohort studies where the researcher tries to establish an association between the exposure and outcome. This article provides an overview of the various study designs.
