| Summary: | This article examines the evolution of Indian politics highlighting the cultural and regional tensions that have shaken the country for the past two decades. The focus will be on the confronting interpretations that have been provided to the increasing power of backward caste movements : are these movements a democratic and modern version of the caste system ? Do they counter the hegemonic aims of the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party), presently in government ? Without attempting to provide a comprehensive and conclusive explanation, the advantages of a comparative regional approach will be put forth. |
