Description
Summary:This paper aims to study the reception of migration issues by the Greek new documentary theatre. Defined as a genre that stages real events and real people, while based on authentic documents and testimonies, documentary forms fall under the broader category of “theatre of the Real”. In an attempt to explore how this kind of theater handles and renegotiates the tensions and public debates that arise because of the migration phenomenon (racism, discrimination, notions of citizenship, linguistic and cultural integration, etc.), we analyze two types of performances, presented in Greece from the mid-2000s onwards: a) those that record the immigrant experience of Greeks and b) those in which Greece stands as a host country for immigrant populations. Our study discusses, among other things, the social and aesthetic challenges of the Greek documentary performances, as well as their impact on audience awareness raising.
