Description
Summary:The aim of this article is to discuss the displacement narrative in the series Disasters and Hopes/Wege übers Land (dir. Martin Eckermann, GDR, 1968) in the context of the culture of memory of post-war forced migration in the GDR and the top-down creation of the founding myth of the East German state. The subject of my attention is the problems related to the circumstances of constructing a specific politics of memory under the conditions of the post-war border order and the division of the world by the Iron Curtain, as well as the transformation of the memorial discourse against the background of generational and media changes (the development of television, which since the 1960s has taken over the role of the main mass medium). The argumentation presented here seeks to answer the questions of what the narrative proposed in the series brought new to the dominant trend of migrant memorial culture, and to what extent it was in line with historical facts, and to what extent it missed the truth, and why.
