description Sixteenth- and seventeenth century textbooks and scholarly works made increasing use of typographic possibilities for printing diagrams and classificatory tables. These tools were also applied to passions, understandably so, because the first elaborated fourfold table analysis was introduced in the Stoic theory of emotions and then continuously discussed through early modern times. I explain some aspects of the history of the fourfold model in the Stoic theory and its modifications in other theories of emotions with some examples of the graphic formulations in printed works. In the second part I address Christian Thomasius’s application of a column analysis to psychological rating of emotions and personality assessment. Thomasius combined physical, psychological and sociological aspects in his tables of emotions and used them in innovative attempts to present emotional profiles with numerical values of the intensity of character traits.
