Comparative study on land bearing capacity based on ecological footprint and agro-ecological zone models—take Guiyang as an instance

| description | Ecological footprint model and agro-ecological zone (AEZ) model were applied respectively in calculating Guiyang land bearing capacity from 1996 to 2005. The calculation results showed that the land bearing capacity based on AEZ rised while the ecological footprint capacity declined. On average, the land bearing capacity based on ecological footprint was only 19.25,33.46 and 30.18 percent of which based on calorie, protein and fat respectively. The fossil energy footprint, which made up of 68.69 percent of total ecological footprint consumption, seriously affected Guiyang land bearing capacity. Comparing to the real population of Guiyang city, the land bearing capacity based on calorie is at the critical stage, and those which based on protein, fat and ecological footprint are all unable to bear Guiyang present population. At the view of the methodology, the differences between two models were analyzed, their applying conditions were also pointed out that join two models together in strategic decision-making by using AEZ to forecast the upper limit of land bearing capacity while using the ecological footprint model to modify it under multi-purpose land use of society, economy, environment and resources. |
