description In Eighteenth Century France, the first popular autobiographies tended to ignore ancestry, highlighting the distance with the original environment and breaking with the lineage tradition of aristocratic memories. But from the end of the century, authors from working-class backgrounds began to allow themselves to go back to their ancestors, claiming the right to record a family history in writing. The biographies of ancestors of the 20th and 21st centuries recompose genealogies of transclass-experience in which social ascension becomes a heritage to be transmitted and origins, a memory to be preserved.
