Description
Summary:This study aims to reveal the effects of the digital divide on older adults by examining the access to, frequency of use, and digital skills related to information and communication technologies (ICT), as well as their engagement with e-government services in Türkiye. The research is based on the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Usage Survey in Households and by Individuals microdata conducted by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TURKSTAT), analyzing responses from 2,623 participants using descriptive statistics and chi-square tests. The findings indicate that older adults have significantly lower levels of access to digital devices and internet use compared to younger age groups. Digital skills vary significantly by age, gender, and education level, with higher education correlating with increased digital competence. Participation in utilization of digital platforms for commercial transactions and access to public services are notably limited. In conclusion, the digital divide among the elderly deepens not only in terms of access but also in use and the benefits derived from digital technologies. The findings underline the necessity of developing inclusive digital policies to enhance participation and reduce digital exclusion among older populations.
