description In order to increase fatigue strength of locomotive gearbox, dynamical characteristics of gearbox structure was analyzed based on finite-element modal analysis method. Previous structure weak area was found according to the modals and stress distribution of the structure in the analysis and the structure was improved. The improved gearbox had higher corresponding natural frequencies and higher structure strength and avoided shell resonance, which met safety service requirements. The numerical results are verified by experiment with good agreement.
