| Summary: | The maps of New Spain drawn by Alexander von Humboldt significantly impacted the scientific communities of the beginning of the 19th century, since they were used as a cartographic model on the two continents for more than fifty years. However, the work of the German scientist must above all be regarded as the synthesis of pre-existing work. Moreover, his national presitge was such that the numerous errors of his cartography in latitude and longitude failed to be noted. Finally, no one contested either his arbitrary toponymy or the watershed that crossed the high central plateaux from north to south, whose representation was later classified as a cordillera. |
