| description |
In order to check the tendency of decreasing phase transition temperatures – full aromatic versus partially saturated derivative – a set of partially hydrogenated 2-phenylnaphthalenes (1-6) was synthesized. The model compounds had roughly the same overall dimensions, i.e. constant side chain lengths and the same «nucleus». The results found for our particular system can be summarized as follows: One observes a steady decrease in phase transition temperatures from 1 to 6, i.e. the more alicyclic the character the lower the transition temperatures. These findings are in full agreement with the already published data on comparable systems[9].
