Description
Summary:
According to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), electronic chart display and information system developers (ECDIS) now have greater flexibility regarding equipment capacity, software interfaces, and additional functionality. This has led to variations in how critical information is presented, interpreted, and utilized, increasing the potential for severe consequences. The industry must emphasize targeted training and continuous skill development to ensure officers can access essential data and functionalities swiftly. Recently, the IMO approved the circular on "Mode Guidelines," also known as the "Guidelines for the Standardization of User Interface Design for Navigation Equipment." The article underscores the importance of ECDIS-specific training programs in enabling users to quickly locate and comprehend critical information, enhancing situational awareness at all levels. Consequently, this research relies on a questionnaire administered to officers who use ECDIS. The results indicated the necessity of adopting the S-Mode to ensure responsiveness, information credibility, security, information quality, and meeting information needs.

Received: 19 July 2024

Accepted: 09 September 2024

Published: 25 September 2024
