description The cultivation of medicinal plants and vegetables in community gardens has gained prominence in contemporary society, driven by the demand for fresh, healthy food and natural health alternatives. In Palmas, Brazil's young capital, with its growing population and high Human Development Index (HDI), community gardens play a fundamental role in providing healthy food and fostering local socialisation. These gardens are crucial for promoting food security in urban areas with limited access to nutritious food, contributing to the improved quality of life of local communities. Furthermore, they encourage sustainable farming practices and can generate income for producers. This study aims to analyze the medicinal plants and vegetables cultivated and marketed in these areas. Medicinal plants and vegetables grown in these gardens are widely used in traditional medicine and local cuisine, promoting the health and well-being of the population. The commercialisation of these products also represents a vital source of income for the city’s economic development. However, challenges related to product quality, safety, and sustainability persist. It is essential to enhance cultivation techniques, expand the supply of safe and healthy food, and foster local development. The study conducted in Palmas’ community gardens involved direct observations, field research, and a bibliographic survey. The objective is to identify the cultivated species. In summary, the investigation of medicinal plants and vegetables grown in Palmas’ community gardens holds significant importance in promoting public health, encouraging sustainable development, and improving the quality of life in an ever-expanding urban context.
