description The democratic process that Catalan institutions have begun with the expressed intention of "disconnecting" from the Spanish constitutional and legal framework, and thus creating a Catalan Republic, follows up at a steady pace after the elections held in September 2015. The growth of the independence movement in Catalonia, to the point of having become almost a majority of the population by now, can only be explained as a result of massive defects in the Spanish constitutional system of territorial distribution of power. This system, created by the Spanish Constitution of 1978, is the product of a fixed understanding of “national” issues, as well as result of old concerns about the political unity of Spain. The way in which events are evolving clearly shows how this inflexibility, far from solving the problems, is just creating more and more difficulties thus failing in the basic aim of constitutional rules of providing solutions in that kind of political situations.
