description The four Sea Grant programs in the Gulf region have active and successful environmental education programs. Despite differences in the organization and implementation of Sea Grant priorities, each program offers an array of opportunities for different audiences to increase awareness, involvement and knowledge about our collective coastal environment. These opportunities include camps and place-based experiential classes for K-12 students; training in areas of concern or interest, from responsible fishing to environmental education; immersive experiences for educators to heighten awareness, share knowledge and improve understanding; classroom-based activities to increase knowledge, stewardship and skills among youth, and community-based activities to improve resilience and quality of life for all Gulf coast residents. Evaluative measures in place for most of these efforts document their success. Gulf Sea Grant programs have helped thousands of individuals of all ages better understand their connection to and impact on the environment and facilitated the progression of individuals into jobs and careers in coastal related positions. This article highlights four areas of that work: K-12 education, professional development for educators, outreach and extension activities and workforce development programs and opportunities.
