| Summary: | This article discusses fatwa a legal opinion or leaned interpretation of a qualified jurist, its literal and figurative meaning and also different ages of the compilation of Islamic jurisprudence which included fatawa as an inevitable part. The renowned qualified jurists Muftis of Islamic biographical literature, their seven classes and the rules and branches of knowledge obligatory for a Mufti, have been thoroughly mentioned. The core discussion is about the start and growth of Fatwa in the sub-continent alongwith its evolution and expansion therein during the times of various rulers. Different books on Fatawa compiled in sub-continent have been analyzed. Some of them are Fatawa Hammadia, Ibrahim Shahia and Alamgiria. Then the books on Fatawa written around the partition of India have also been included in the list. The study introduces all Fatawa books quite objectively, irrespective of their belonging to any sect or cult. These Fatawa books are like Fatwa Abdul Hayy, Thanai, Rashidia, Imdad al Fatawa, Naziria and Fatawa Rizvia. Side by side with the introduction, peculiar qualities of Fatawa books have also been pointed out. |
